Why Powder Rooms Are the Perfect Place to Take Design Risks
If there’s one space in the home where you can afford to have a little fun — it’s the powder room.
Because guests only spend a short time there, powder baths offer the rare opportunity to step outside the “safe” design box and try something bold. Whether it’s experimenting with color, pattern, or statement details, these small spaces are where personality can shine.
In this recent powder room remodel in Western Kentucky, we transformed a traditional, neutral space into a playful space that now feels collected, unexpected, and entirely custom.

Here are some tips on how you can recreate this in your own home!
A piece of funky art, wallpaper, unique tile, etc!
Because they’re small and briefly used, they’re the perfect place to test bold ideas that might feel intimidating in a larger space. Color, pattern, and texture become easier to embrace when you’re working with smaller wall space.
For example; this statement art piece, it definitely wouldn’t be my top choice to put in a main living space. But here it holds a fun focal point that brings in just the right amount of color and character.

Color drenching the walls and trim in a single hue instantly makes a room feel intentional and enveloping. AND contrary to popular belief, this is not a new trend! Color drenching is a centuries old technique that was often found in Victorian and Georgian homes and I am glad it has made it’s way back. (AKA let’s all get over the sad beige error and start adding character to our homes again!)
Both of these bathroom are drenched in one of my favorite greens: Sherwin Williams Lauriston Stone

Once the walls and floors make their statement, the finishing touches bring the room to life.
Be intentional with the below selections:
These elements keep the room feeling curated rather than theme-heavy. The goal is always to strike that balance between playful and polished.

Powder rooms are the perfect place to try something different. Whether you’re drawn to bold wallpaper, saturated paint, patterned tile, or sculptural lighting, these small spaces invite creativity.
If you’ve been wanting to take a design risk in your home — start with your powder bath. It’s a small footprint with big impact.
